The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
