Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
