Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
