Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
