RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
